How It Works

Tinnitus, hyperacusis, and misophonia are generally subjective conditions, but we use a 2-tiered method of measuring

1) the audiometric qualities of your specific symptoms and
2) its impact on you.

Because tinnitus is so often caused by hearing loss (and hyperacusis and misophonia is associated with tinnitus), we need to know the status of your overall hearing health; this begins with a comprehensive audiological evaluation conducted in accordance with the 2014 Clinical Practice Guideline for Tinnitus established by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

At Tinnitus and Hearing Health Calgary, a comprehensive tinnitus and sound tolerance assessment includes tests such as:

Speech Audiometry with Speech in Noise Testing

Measures how well you understand words and sentences not just in quiet, but also in background noise

Acoustic Reflexes

An objective test that measures the contraction of muscles in your middle ear in response to loud sounds.

Minimum masking levels

Determines how much of a noise stimulus is required to mask your perception of tinnitus. This provides an approximate measure of how loud you perceive your symptoms and can be used to determine appropriate sound therapy.

High Resolution Extended High Frequency Audiometry

Measures your hearing across multiple frequencies and loudness levels. Most clinics stop at 8000 Hz, but we test up to 16,000 Hz to provide a fuller picture of what sounds your auditory system is truly capable of picking up.

Otoacoustic Emissions

Uses very sensitive microphones to objectively measure the movement of hair cells within your middle ear.

Loudness discomfort levels

Measures the volume at which external sound becomes uncomfortable; this test gives us important information on the feasibility of potential tinnitus treatments and is especially vital for those clients with sensitivity to noise.

Tympanometry

An objective test that measures the functioning of the middle ear (your eardrum and middle ear bones)

Tinnitus pitch and loudness matching

Presents sounds to help you identify your specific perception of tinnitus. This provides an important baseline for tinnitus management planning, which we will customize for you

Residual inhibition

Measures how your tinnitus responds when your brain is introduced to a competing sound

Once we’ve got an objective picture of what’s going on, now comes the most important part: we need to assess the impact of tinnitus, hyperacusis, or misophonia on your quality of life!

These conditions can cause a multitude of negative consequences on your emotional, mental, and even physical well-being; that’s why we use standardized inventory tests to measure the subjective burden you may be experiencing. These tests are also used to track your progress during your treatment plan.
